Hey,
So ive been thinking about doing something like this for years now, and i got serious about it a couple of months ago. Its by no means perfect, but its not meant to be. Im not a DJ and i have put this together in some sequencing software, and im not bothered to tell people that either! Its not meant to be a proper DJ mix, its just a bunch of my fave tracks all loosely tied together for all to enjoy. Im making no excuses for the transitions between tracks, mainly as ive not changed any tempos or tried to keep it into one genre of music, it just tried to make it flow as i saw fit. Its not perfect but thats the point of it! Ive explained each track below and why is on here/what it means to me. I hope you all enjoy it!
1. Flowmasters - Let it take control (Pumped Piano Mix)
This is as good as piano house ever got or ever needed to get. The sexiest, funkiest piano ive ever heard on top of a banging bit of house. Amazingly this track is from 1989, and it still sounds amazing to this day. I think i originally heard this version on a Liam Howlett XL Recordings mix he did back in 91 or something. But its also on the XL Recordings Chapter 1 cd, but im pretty sure I heard that cd after i heard the liam mix. Either way, I love this track and its the only way i could start. Classic.
2. Dr. Dre - Lyrical Gangbang
Ive always been a big Dr.Dre fan, I remember buying his 2001 cd from Woolworths when i was about 12. But i honestly hadnt really bothered to hear much of his 1st solo album; The Chronic. This is actually a really late addition to the mix as up untill about a month ago, I dont think I had ever heard this track. But my friend Dom posted it on Facebook and i fell in love with it. Even though Dre isnt on the track, it doesent matter. Its an absolute banger, as hard as rap has ever got. The first of a few rap tracks on here involving Dr.Dre.
3. Dr.Dre & Ice Cube - Natural Born Killaz
I actually first heard this track on the ECW PPV 'Anarchy Rulz 99'. A wrestler called 'New Jack' walked out to this song, the place absolutley went mental and he pasted about 7 wrestlers with all kinds of crazy weapons including a staple gun. All the while this track was playing in the background. The image of New Jack tearing apart all these guys to this aggressive collaboration between Dre & Cube totally grabbed me from the moment I saw it. Its a badass track. Nuff said.
4. N.W.A - Gangsta Gangsta
I was introduced to N.W.A in 2002 by my best mate at the time. We were all well into the rap scene and he had N.W.A on tape, and played this song to me. Straight away the big beats, aggressive lyrics and funky bassline grabbed me and i couldnt get enough of it. I bought 'N.W.A. Greatest Hits' from HMV at the back end of 2002 and spent my entire school holidays in October listening to it pretty much. Theres many, many tracks from that CD which are all worthy of being in this mix, but Gangsta Gangsta still does it for me. Real gangsta rap. Hard as nails. Love it.
5. Michael Jackson - Wanna Be Startin Somethin'
MJ was my first idol. His concerts and music videos mesmorised me as a kid. They still do infact. But this track is pure funk. Taken from Thriller, its the best track off that classic album if you ask me. Its perfectly produced. I love it. Another artist who i could have chosen many tracks of theirs to sit in this mix.
6. The Beatles - Helter Skelter
This technically isnt really The Beatles, its Paul McCartney going mental, but its taken off a Beatles album. This track is so experimental, backwards guitars, loads of crazy production techniques and a super rugged sound. The White album is full of weird stuff like this, but nothing does it better for me than Helter Skelter. I love the Beatles, their early stuff is just pop perfection, but the weird, experimental stuff they started messing about doing toward the end of the sixties is just so good. 4 seriously, seriously talented minds working as one. Love them.
7. Mauro Picotto - Komodo (Save a Soul)
I was really into trance & house toward the end of the 90's and early in the 00's. If i wasnt listening to rap or hip hop, id be listening to some trance or house. I couldnt have been 13 when i first heard this track on 'Now Dance 2001 Part 2', but it really stood out as one of the most melodic tracks on that CD. Not much else to say about this other than its a classic! Loads of trance which could be in this mix too.
8. Ciara ft. Missy Elliot - Work
I heard this back when it came out in summer 2009, and it was my track of the summer no doubt. That dirty synth gets me everytime! Ive always been a fan of Ciara (as theres two of her tracks in this mix!) but this came out and smashed it. It still sounds awesome.
9. Xpansions - Move your Body
Im a massive fan of old skool music, and I first heard this on a compilation mixed by Slipmatt called 'Moondance: True Rave Anthems' toward the end of 2005. Actually it wasnt until a couple of years ago that i totally started appreciating this track for what it was and is. Its such a quality dance track and I cant get enough of it!!! Ive rinsed that 'Moondance' CD more times than I could ever count, its filled with proper underground anthems from start to finish, and whilst some of them were chart hits, they were never really intended to go there. This was one of them, Ive seen the performance from TOTP from those days, so i guess alot of the underground probably rejected this track at the time. I love it though and it stands out as one of the best tracks from the early 90's no doubt.
10. Rhythm Section - Dreamworld
This is as good as hardcore ever got if you ask me. Im well into Rhythm Section, but this track is by far my fave. That synth line is just beautiful. Not much to say about this, it just needs to be heard.
11. Rage Racer OST (videogame) - Silver Stream
So i reckon this one will shock a few people. Its a track from a video game!! AHHHH!!
Joking aside, this is a serious piece of music. Ridge Racer games have always been known for their amazing soundtracks, and this was taken from the 3rd one in the Playstation series called Rage Racer. So smooth, it had to be heard by everyone else so thats why its on here. Shame that videogame developers dont put in the same effort when it comes to soundtracks these days. Back in 1996 when almost everything was produced in-house, this was as good as it got. These days developers just bung a bunch of popular chart tracks together instead. Personally i much prefer in-house music done by quality producers. But thats just me.
12. Magnetic Man feat. Katy B - Perfect Stranger
This is the best track of 2010 bar none in my opinion. Its sleazy, grimey, funky and is very real. Produced by Benga, Skream & Artwork, this track basically got me intrested in not only those three producers, but the dubstep scene as a whole.
13. Rui da Silva - Touch Me
This track is the ultimate 'late night, 3 in the morning anthem' for me. Its just got such a dark vibe, the pads, the vocals, the synth and the all over the place tempo make this a fave of mine. And it comes alive if you listen to it in the dark. It might sound a bit mental, but try it. As good as anything else on here. Easy.
14. Pharell feat. Jay-Z - Frontin'
One of my favorite tracks from 2003, more specifically Summer 2003. Reminds me of being 14 again and not having a care in the world. Pharell/The Neptunes are killer producers and they were really shaking things up back when this got released. I remember buying N.E.R.D.'s debut album back in 2002 just for Lapdance. As good as Lapdance is, Frontin' just means more to me and fits in with the dark, late night vibe in the middle of this mix. Ive got a thing for music which comes alive at night, and this another one of those tracks which is deeper at 2am in the morning than it is at 2pm in the afternoon.
15. G-Unit - Wanna Get To Know You
What a track this is. Again more hip-hop/rap but with a twist. This is really funky, really chilled and very cool. Taken from the first G-Unit album; Beg for Mercy. Its actually a collaboration between them and a vocalist called Joe, they also released another track together called 'Ride wit You' in 2004 which is AS good as this track but in different ways. 'Wanna Get to Know You' is more laid back than 'Ride wit You' and fits more into this mix, hence why its here. Real sexy track.
16. Ciara feat. Ludacris - Oh
Now this is dirty. I remember hearing this back in summer 2005 (bit a theme here, summer tracks!!) and thinking it was the hottest thing all year. Its so deep. Another Ciara track, this time with Ludacris on the vocal tip, its proper sleaze. Really love this track, it reminds me of the summer of 2005 when i was having the best time of my life. I tried many times to produce my own twist on this track in 2005 and failing everytime. I eventually figured out it was perfect as it was and theres nothing I could do to make it any better. It really was one of the best things I heard in 2005. Probably not heard by many but its always stuck with me. Class track.
17. Lil Jon feat Eastside Boyz - Play no Games
This is a bit of a strange one. I dont know how I came about hearing this track for the first time, but I found it on a cd I had put together in 2004 when i was going through some old CD's a few months ago and i remembered just how good it was. Another dirty piece of hip-hop, but alot lighter than the tracks ive put before it. Certainly has its place on here for people to check out, another track which i suspect most wont have ever heard of. Im glad i found it again when i did!
18. All Saints - Bootie Call
I just had to include this. Whilst everyone was going mental over the Spice Girls in the late 90's, i was well into this lot. Their music was much more appealing to me than the rest of the girlband stuff from that time, and it still sounds quality today. All Saints first album is one of my faves, and whilst some might consider this cheesy, i love it. Quality video to this one too. Still sounds fresh and real. Reminds me of some cool times growing up.
19. Leftfield - Dusted
Some might argue that the Prodigy did hip-hop and dance music best with the Kool Keith collboration 'Diesel Power', but for me, 'Dusted' feat. Roots Manuva by Leftfield did it better and deeper. The bass in this track is incredibly hard, the vibe is filthy and Roots Manuva sounds as good as ever in this one. Liam might have the beats, but nobody does bass quite like Leftfield.
20. Prodigy - Your Love
To be honest, i wasnt going to put a Prodigy track on here, as theres just too many that mean something to me from the many years ive been listening to them. But i thought about it and this track stands out as the best of The Prodigys early material for me. Its warehouse dance music at its finest and even though Liam probably wrote it inside a few days, it captures the spirit and vibe of a rave perfectly. Ask ravers from those days and they will all remember this one and tell you its one of their all time faves too. Its not hard to see why.
21. Nirvana - Come as you Are
Im not really a big fan of rock music generally, but theres something about Nirvana that grabs me everytime i hear them. They had such an edge to their music. Ive always thought their beats were very hip-hop influenced and it appeals to me more than the other rock music of its time. Obviously they pioneered the Grunge scene and wrote some groundbreaking tracks during their time together. But this is my favorite track of theirs. Its got attitude and its raw; the way I like my music. And because of that, its the perfect way to end this mix if you ask me!
